“This is your world—shape it or someone else will” – Gary Lew (Look up. At Pure, we love this quote.) To me this quote is really influential in my professional and in my personal life. As much as we try to have the work/life balance, sometimes the two sides creep across that blurred line. In this case, it’s a great thing!
I just recently joined the Pure Project Relations team and before doing so, I was working for an organization that is doing remarkable things in our community and working with a team of talented, caring, and driven individuals.
Here comes the but……But my career was moving in a direction in a sector that I felt was different from my career goals, and from my vision of what, “I wanted to be when I grew up.”
So what did I do? I decided to re-shape my world. Moving totally away from the sector I was working in, I took a leap back into a world that challenged me, excited me and scared the heck out of me. Into a world of large-scale projects and the important and influential relationships that affect those projects. I didn’t want to completely change the career choice I made in university and worked so hard toward, but I also wasn’t content with the path my career was on—I didn’t change my career choice, I just re-shaped it into something that I am passionate about.
This quote can also apply to our personal lives. If there is something in your life that is impacting how you act or feel, do something about it. It may be difficult to completely change it but re-shape it before that thing re-shapes you, your lookout or views.
How does this quote apply to my personal life? My husband works away and has since we first met. Because of this, it’s easy to get worried about the future and spend hours thinking about it. So we made a deal to start enjoying the little things in the now. Facetime at the end of the day, and making important plans as something we can look forward to and get excited about. This could be a night out the next time he is home, or it can be a vacation planned together. (Two weeks till Toronto and a Leafs Game!) We can’t change the situation we are in, so we are re-shaping it and having fun!
Don’t dwell on the negative, unknown or the uncertainty of a situation, when there is a way to re-shape the situation that is beneficial to all involved, professional, personal or both.
